Repertoire: Shostakovich's 2nd and 3rd Symphonies--Is There A BEST or WORST?
These are interesting, experimental pieces that only get performed and recorded in the context of complete symphony cycles. I've never seen them programmed live outside of "festivals" dedicated to the composer. No conductor stakes their reputation on them. They may earn respect, but few love them, and neither seems amenable to much expressive variation. You wind them up and let them go, and they do their thing. End of story?
