Then you notice your own shadow on the grass, and it is already here, in the shade the old maple has been keeping since before your grandmother was born, and the thought stops working. Nobody comes. That is the strange part. The table is set. Six chairs shoved out at whatever angle the last person shoved them, a lace cloth going soft at the folds, a lattice pie you can smell from where you stand. Watermelon cut open and sweating. Bread on a board with the knife left across it. Someone jammed sunflowers into a jar without arranging them at all and honestly they look better for it. The blue speckled coffee pot has a dent in one side. Somebody dropped it. Somebody kept it anyway. You wait for the screen door. It doesn't go. Up on the rise the white farmhouse minds its own business, green shutters, wraparound porch, nobody on it. The red barn sits behind, and the silo throws a long clean shadow over cut wheat, and none of it is waiting on you for anything, which takes a minute to get used to. So you stop listening for footsteps and start listening to what's actually there. Birdsong first. Not one bird. Loads of them, layered, working the maple and the fence line, unhurried in that way summer birds have when nothing has scared them in weeks. Then the wind chimes right above your head in the branches, sweet, irregular, going off whenever the countryside breeze feels like it. You catch yourself waiting for the next one. That's when you know you've settled. The corn is high and green all the way to the picket fence. Past it the wheat's already cut and stood in shocks, gold going bronze, and the hay wagon sits half loaded like whoever was working it wandered off for a drink and just never came back. Phlox in a magenta that shouldn't be legal. Hollyhocks leaning the way tall things lean. Foxglove doing whatever foxglove does. There's a farm bell on a post by the path. Nobody rings it. That's the part that gets you, for some reason you'd struggle to explain to anyone. Later the light goes long and honey coloured across the lawn and the crickets come in underneath everything, so quiet you can't say when they started. A breeze moves through the maple and the whole canopy shifts at once. The dapple slides across the tablecloth. The chimes answer it. You don't move. Nobody's asking you to. The pie stays warm longer than pie should. You decide not to look into it. Ten hours of birdsong, sweet wind chimes, countryside breeze and subtle crickets. No music, no talking. Just a harvest afternoon on a New England farm going on at its own pace, whether anybody's watching or not. Stay. The chair was always yours.
