KBS Documentary 3 Days (Sunday, 11:05 PM, KBS 2TV) "A Simple Station Where the Wind Takes a Break - Wongok Village Yangwon Station" (Aired May 25, 2014) A simple station built by the villagers themselves, nestled in the valley separating Uljin and Bonghwa. Even now, buses do not reach this mountain village, leaving the elderly with the only means of transportation. 72 hours at Wongok Village Yangwon Station, a place where the wind and sunlight take a brief break. ◆ A Miraculous Simple Station Built by the Villagers Located on the upper reaches of the Nakdong River, dividing Uljin County and Bonghwa, Wongok Village is a small mountain village with about 40 residents in 20 households. Lacking proper transportation, the villagers had to walk over 10 li to Seungbu Station in the neighboring village. The Yeongdong Line train passed right in front of the village, but it never stopped. Forced to walk along the railroad tracks to and from Seungbu Station, more than ten residents lost their lives after being struck by trains on bridges and tunnels. As the death toll increased each year, residents petitioned the Korea Railroad Corporation and the Blue House repeatedly to stop the trains. In April 1988, 33 years after the opening of the Yeongdong Line, a train finally stopped in Wongok Village. Upon hearing the news of the train's arrival, residents cheered, each one armed with hoes and pickaxes, and built the platform and waiting room with their own hands. It was three days spent with the residents of Wongok Village at this small station, built with tears and joy. ◆ A Day Brought by a Train Twenty-six years after the train first stopped at Yangwon Station, the train remains the best mode of transportation in this mountain village. The village elders take the early morning train to the Chunyang Five-Day Market to buy farm tools like hoes and sickles. They then wait for the evening train, get perms at the market salon, and return to their village. Since April of last year, a tourist train has stopped at Yangwon Station six times a day for three, five, and ten minutes, bringing a flash market to this once quiet mountain village. The village grandmothers harvest, boil, and dry wild greens daily to make a vegetable pancake. With the influx of out-of-towners arriving on the tourist train, the village's daily life and atmosphere have gradually changed.
