On February 6, 1958, Manchester United were returning to England after a historic night in Belgrade. Matt Busby's team had just eliminated Red Star Belgrade and qualified for the European Cup semi-finals. They were young, talented, and daring. They were known as the Busby Babes, and many saw them as the future of English football. But the return journey wasn't direct. The plane, a British European Airways Airspeed AS-57 Ambassador 2, was scheduled to make a technical stop at Munich-Riem Airport in West Germany to refuel before continuing on to Manchester. What seemed like a routine stop turned into one of the most memorable tragedies in the history of sport and aviation. BEA Flight 609 attempted to take off several times from Munich. The first two attempts were aborted due to power problems in the left engine. On the third attempt, the crew decided to apply power more gradually, confident that the aircraft could accelerate properly on the long runway, which was almost two kilometers in length. But the runway was not in normal condition. The snow, water, and slush accumulated on the surface began to slow the aircraft just when it most needed to accelerate. The Airspeed Ambassador reached a speed close to takeoff speed, but then began to lose speed. In a matter of seconds, the aircraft was trapped in a critical situation: too fast to stop, too slow to fly. On board were Manchester United players, coaching staff, journalists, companions, and crew. Among them were figures such as Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton, Harry Gregg, Tommy Taylor, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Mark Jones, Billy Whelan, and Matt Busby. The accident resulted in 23 deaths and 21 survivors. Eight Manchester United players, several club members, journalists, and crew members died.
