Historias Innecesarias: Triangulo de las Bermudas

December 5, 1945. One hundred kilometers offshore from the Florida coast. A lieutenant flying solo picks up nervous voices on the radio. One of them says, “I don’t know where we are. We got lost after the last turn.” He recognizes those voices; they belong to some of the fourteen men aboard five bombers conducting a routine exercise, flying the same route other squadrons had been completing without incident. The man claiming to be lost is a Pacific War veteran, the leader of the fourteen-man group, with over 2,500 flight hours under his belt. He reports that both his compasses have died, that he can see land below, and that he’s certain he’s flying over the Florida Keys. But he wasn’t in the Keys. He was over 300 kilometers away, on the other side of the peninsula, lost over the Bahamas. But he doesn’t know it. And for the next four hours, every decision he makes will stem from that mistaken certainty, as his fuel dwindles and night approaches. Then, simply, they all disappeared. And that afternoon, not only were five planes, a rescue plane, and almost thirty men lost, but, without anyone realizing it, the most profitable mystery of the 20th century was being born: the one that would sell twenty million books, fill decades of television, and convince the entire planet that there was a piece of ocean that swallowed ships and planes: The Bermuda Triangle.
