As early as the Neolithic period, it is believed that both males and females removed their head hair to avoid parasites and to prevent opponents from grabbing them by the hair in case of a fight. Later, in ancient Greece and Rome, the absence of body hair was an ideal of beauty, youth, and social status. Even then, the classical ideal of the hairless female body as a symbol of purity and innocence was being constructed—a sexist burden that would reappear in Renaissance art and that we still carry today. In the 20th century, with the revolution in women's fashion, clothing became increasingly smaller, revealing a body that, naturally, had hair. From 1915 onward, advertisements for razors and depilatory creams cheerfully encouraged women to eliminate their "inappropriate" hair and be smooth and flawless to please men. Hair removal of the underarms, legs, and bikini line gradually became popular. And although the hippie movement sought to restore body hair to its natural image, the 80s and 90s decisively eradicated what remained of this "normalization," with the triumph of the Brazilian wax.
