Precepts are the foundation of Bodhisattvas. All the worldly troubles, hardships, afflictions, and sufferings experienced by sentient beings are caused by not upholding precepts. For example, if you don't obey the precept against running a red light, you'll get into trouble. As human beings, we cannot be greedy or angry; anger leads to fights. We cannot be foolish; doing stupid things leads to arrest. All of this is because we haven't upheld the precepts. Keeping the precepts is extremely important. If you don't keep the precepts, you will create all sorts of negative karma. A person who is carefree and indifferent to everything is prone to trouble. What does keeping the precepts mean? It's like having a Bodhisattva residing above your head. Those who keep the precepts are like having a Bodhisattva above them, constantly protecting them. Therefore, those who keep the precepts won't cause trouble. Many acts of killing arise from not keeping the precepts and from anger. Hatred leads to the urge to kill. People today are just talking about compassion, about cherishing marital relationships, but if something doesn't go their way, they immediately turn on each other. Hatred will definitely harm others. As long as you hate, you risk harming the lives and wisdom of sentient beings. When you live in society with hatred, you may commit acts of killing. Those who hate this and that every day will eventually commit acts of killing. You must have broad compassion. No matter what you do, you should see that others are pitiful and pathetic. They harm you because they don't understand. If you frequently cultivate compassion even when harming others, you will gradually develop compassion to help them. By not hating others, you will slowly cleanse the impurities in your heart. Hatred breeds affliction. The karma of killing has two consequences: one is a shortened lifespan. Many people who kill fish, pigs, and chickens will eventually suffer the same consequence—a shortened lifespan. The other consequence is illness. People who constantly engage in killing will either fall ill or die young. Know that when we worship Buddha and learn the compassion of Bodhisattvas today, it is to exchange it for our wisdom-life, by letting go of our anger. For Buddhist friends who don't want a short life or to get sick, remember this: Do not commit the sin of killing. If you eat our food, they will continue to kill. If you don't eat our food, they won't sell it and won't kill us. Eating vegetarian food one more meal means eating meat one less. Also, when making offerings to Bodhisattvas, there are rules. You absolutely cannot eat anything before making the offering. If you're preparing offerings for Bodhisattvas and say, "My mouth is dry, I'll eat an apple first," you absolutely cannot eat it. Otherwise, you're committing theft. Can you eat things given to others? Therefore, in temples and Buddhist halls, you cannot take anything without permission. Taking anything without permission is theft. This is why the Master emphasizes precepts. The precept against stealing is very important. Even if a couple has a good relationship, if one secretly takes the other's wallet to buy something, it's still theft. Taking something without permission is stealing. You must keep this precept. One of the precepts is against sexual misconduct. This precept must be taken very seriously. Any improper thoughts or intentions are violations. If you go out and look for this person or that person, wandering around aimlessly, that's a violation. If you have feelings of lust, if you love something you shouldn't love, that's a violation. In Buddhism, if you look at many inappropriate pictures or pornographic content on the computer, and then you feel attracted to it, then you've violated the precept against sexual misconduct. Some people also like to tell or listen to dirty jokes. Telling or listening to dirty jokes violates the precept against sexual misconduct, and if a girl hears them and then has thoughts about them, then you've violated the precept. All of these must be avoided because the consequences are very serious. Regarding false speech, Bodhisattvas clearly distinguish between major and minor lies. A minor lie is telling untruths, but without harming others. For example, if someone says, "Can we go together tomorrow?" and you say, "I have something to do tomorrow," that's a minor lie because it doesn't harm others. After telling such a lie, you should repent to the Bodhisattva and all sentient beings. Generally, reciting the Great Repentance Liturgy is sufficient. A person should be pure. What is a major lie?
