Previously, the heroes of the Alliance traveled to Stormwind to help King Varian Wrynn reclaim his kingdom from the control of his advisor, Lady Katrana Prestor. Varian Wrynn, Shandris Feathermoon, Broll Bearmantle, Muradin Bronzebeard, and Calia Menethil fought fiercely against the warriors manipulated by the traitor to reach the throne, where they also held Prince Anduin Wrynn captive. At the end of the great war, Broll and Calia discovered that Prestor's warriors possessed ancient manipulation magic of Dragon origin, confirming that the advisor was a Dragon. In the final battle, Lady Prestor reveals her true identity as Onyxia, daughter of the god Deathwing (her goal was to manipulate and weaken Stormwind to expand her influence to the other mortal realms in anticipation of her father's arrival). The heroes of the Alliance manage to kill Onyxia, thus regaining control of the realm. Varian entrusts his kingdom to Bolvar Fordragon and decides to return with troops to Theramore to help defeat the Horde. Three days later, after the long march north through Kalimdor, Thrall, along with Grom Hellscream and Drek'thar, discovers several demonic orc settlements under the leadership of the Burning Legion. They head towards the demonic ravine where the battle against Mannoroth took place.
