Abandoned Railroad to be Restored? South Coast Rail Phase 2 Route - Stoughton to Taunton - 3/2026

In this video, we’re going to take a look at the abandoned section of the proposed South Coast rail phase 2 extension. South Coast rail is a project that has been getting worked on for years to bring back passenger rail service from Boston to Fall River and New Bedford. A full route plan originally included restoring trackage at the end of the Mbta Stoughton line south to Taunton over an abandoned line. Due to environmental concerns and the cost associated with them, the project was cut into two phases. Phase 1, would extend the Mbta Middleborough line over the Middleborough secondary and then would head south on the original south Coast route to Fall River and New Bedford. Phase 2, would restore the Track from Taunton to Stoughton and trains would be rerouted off of the Middleborough secondary. The full build also calls for an additional station in fall River and electrification of the line. South Coast rail phase one was completed and opened in 2025 but phase 2 will offer passengers a faster route over what’s currently the abandoned line. Unfortunately, there is some uncertainty over if this second phase will even happen, but the Mbta has not completely called it off, even if they’ve been quiet about it recently. There’s still hope holding out for it though, but for now all we can do is advocate and wait for its eventual completion. There are a few segments along this line that were abandoned at different times which means the right away is now in various different conditions. Some Track is still in place and other sections were removed in the 60s and the 30s. We’ll follow the line from the end of active Mbta track in Stoughton down to the end of the Dean Street industrial track run by MASS COASTAL. This will not show the full phase two route, just the section of line that has been abandoned. This is one of several videos in a series where I will be diving into the phase 2 extension. Future videos on this topic will go into some of the challenges rebuilding an abandoned railroad here, the full route including the freight trackage, as well as the benefits of phase 2. I may also do a video on what other proposed Mbta projects will have a positive effect on South Coast rail.
