What if the NHL Adopted Promotion and Relegation: A Pointless Thought Experiment

Listen, I know as well as the next European guy, that the thing Canadians and American's love most in the world are European sports fans suggesting an alteration to their favourite sports and league structures. I know you love this and that is why I crafted this near 20 minute ramble on how and why the NHL (lets say) could implement a Promotion and Relegation system in the World's greatest... but - most importantly also, improvable league. But, in all serious this is never going to happen, this is but a thought experiment. But feel free to come at me.
