Welcome to “Oh Brother – Dokorder PT-72 Reel Recorder”! This video is an exploration of the preservation of a vintage 5-inch reel to reel tape recorder that was most likely built in 1968 by the Dokorder company in Japan. It has a unique “upright” design, but is suffering from a major manufacturing flaw – Oh Brother, look at what happened! There is more to the phrase “Oh, Brother” as you’ll find out within the video! In this video we’ll explore the reel to reel tape recorder and see that it is, in spite of its unfortunate manufacturing defect, quite a good design! It arrive DOA at ClydeSight from E-Bay, and it appears that someone got into it earlier in an attempt to repair it. This is evidenced by some missing screws! As you’ll see in the video, the machine is almost UN-repairable. However, ClydeSight came up with a solution to get it working again, and got some pretty good sound out of its vintage audio electronics. I am always on the lookout for INTERESTING looking and designed U.S. consumer grade tape recorders – the odd ones, the unusual, and the bizarre – to share with fans of ClydeSight Channel on YouTube. I was alive when these machines were introduced to the buying public. I saw them in the stores, saw the ads, saw how well or poorly they sold in the stores because I WAS THERE. This vintage audio technology has long been abandoned, but I can preserve it for future generations with the accuracy of actually having been there when these wonders (and some of these tape recorders DO make one wonder!) of audio technology first sprang into sound. I like the challenge of an E-BAY DOA because it gives me the opportunity to explore in depth the interesting and creative designs of these vintage tape recorders. The Dokorder PT-72 reel to reel tape recorder is no exception. It is a clever, somewhat rare and intriguing full featured machine, well engineered, and after decades of unworkability, it has jumped back to surprisingly good life, as you will hear in the demo section of the video. ********* COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER: This is an educational video, a critique, and report on an historic piece of vintage audio electronic equipment that is no longer manufactured or sold in stores.
