When an "Easy" Mountain Route Becomes Anything But Easy ❄️🏔️ TUC DETH PÒRT DE VIELHA #️⃣PYRENEES
✨ Turn on subtitles for additional comments and useful information! ✨ TUC DETH PÒRT DE VIELHA (2606 m) 12.2 km / +- 1050 m Ascent: Vall de Molières | Descent: Lac Redon Tuc deth Pòrt de Vielha is one of the finest viewpoints in the Aran Valley, offering spectacular panoramic views across the entire valley. We chose this route because, under normal conditions, it is considered a technically straightforward ascent—perfect for returning to the mountains after a difficult period. In my case, I was recovering from double spinal surgery and was still in rehabilitation, so we were looking for a relatively easy winter route to regain confidence in the mountains. But the mountain always has the final say. Snow conditions turned out to be far more demanding than we had expected, with a huge amount of fresh powder that we sank into with almost every step. On the ascent we had several slips while wearing snowshoes, and although we probably should have switched earlier, we eventually put on crampons to continue more safely. We planned a circular descent, but just like on the way up, there wasn't a single track to follow. The entire day became an exercise in breaking trail, navigating through winter terrain, and constantly making decisions along the way. Despite the extra effort, it was a valuable learning experience that helped us continue developing our winter mountain skills. A route that is relatively straightforward in summer can become something completely different once winter arrives. Although it never became a technical climb, the snow conditions forced us to negotiate several challenging sections, and we ended up spending nearly 12 hours on the mountain. Once again, the mountains reminded us that knowing the route isn't enough—it's the conditions that ultimately determine the difficulty of the day.
