Russia has equipped several Black Sea Fleet submarines with special defensive structures to counter Ukrainian drones. British intelligence believes this is due to Ukraine's growing ability to strike targets far from the front line. This is stated in a new intelligence review by the UK Ministry of Defence, writes Business Insider. According to British intelligence, analysis of satellite images taken between June 6 and 9 revealed special anti-drone structures above the conning towers of three Kilo-class submarines based in Novorossiysk. London believes similar equipment will soon be installed on a fourth submarine at the base. A published satellite image shows two submarines equipped with such protective structures. British intelligence notes that the installation of the "cages" is almost certainly a preemptive measure in response to increasingly effective Ukrainian long-range strikes. "This is almost certainly being carried out as a preventative measure in response to Ukraine's growing ability to strike targets far from the front line," the assessment says. After the outbreak of full-scale war, Novorossiysk became the main base of Russia's Black Sea Fleet. Moscow was forced to transfer a significant portion of its ships there following a series of successful Ukrainian attacks on naval facilities in occupied Sevastopol. Ukraine has repeatedly attacked Novorossiysk using naval drones, and Russia has responded by installing water barriers to protect the harbor. As the authors of the review note, so-called "cellular armor" has long been used to provide additional protection for tanks and other armored vehicles from drones and ammunition fragments. However, the use of such structures to protect submarines is quite unusual. Novorossiysk has become the hub for Russia's Black Sea Fleet after an intensive Ukrainian strike campaign earlier in the war forced Moscow to pull warships and other assets from a long-held base at Sevastopol, on the occupied Crimean peninsula. Ukraine has carried out a number of attacks against the Novorossiysk base with drones, particularly exploding uncrewed boats. Russia has tried to defend the naval base by placing barriers in the water. The anti-drone cages underscore new efforts to protect its submarines, though they are primarily designed to counter aerial threats. As reported, in June, the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a Neptune cruise missile attack on a Russian Black Sea Fleet military facility in occupied Sevastopol. Furthermore, strikes against naval targets continue to this day. Amid these attacks, the superyacht Graceful, which Western media have linked to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, is leaving European waters and heading for Murmansk, Russia. According to The Telegraph, the vessel is traveling under heavy guard by Russian naval vessels amid concerns about further attacks by Ukrainian long-range drones.
