Garmin GPS Weather Explained: Map Overlays, FIS-B, and Airport Weather

In this video, I’ll walk through how to properly use weather features on Garmin GPS units, using a GNX 375 as the demo platform. Everything shown here also applies to the GPS 175 and GNC 355, as long as the unit is connected to an ADS-B receiver. We’ll cover the three places weather lives on Garmin GPS units: • Map page weather overlays, including NEXRAD, lightning, and METAR flags • The dedicated FIS-B weather page, where you’ll find NEXRAD, cloud tops, icing, winds and temperatures aloft, PIREPs, turbulence, and weather advisories • Airport-specific weather on the waypoint information page, including METARs and TAFs I’ll also show you how to verify ADS-B weather reception by checking the FIS-B weather status page, so you know your data is current and valid. This video focuses on understanding what the weather data is actually telling you, how to use it strategically in flight, and just as importantly, what its limitations are. The goal isn’t to overwhelm you with meteorology, but to help you make better, more informed decisions using the tools already built into your panel.
