"Beyond Illusion" is a sermon delivered by Davide Galliani on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at the Oikos Evangelical Church in Settimo Torinese. Starting from Matthew 4 and the citation of Psalm 91 during Jesus' temptations in the desert, this reflection addresses one of the most sensitive issues in contemporary Christian faith: the risk of transforming God into a religious guarantee. In the Gospel story, the devil quotes Scripture. Not against God, but precisely to speak of God. It is one of the most disturbing passages of the Gospel, because it shows how even the Bible can be used anti-evangelically when it is interpreted as a magic formula, an automatic mechanism, or a tool for controlling reality. Through a historical, exegetical, and hermeneutical approach, this sermon proposes a rereading of Psalm 91 in light of Christ crucified, reflecting on the tension between the letter and the Spirit, between religious fundamentalism and adult faith. Christian faith does not eliminate the desert.
