Gregor Mendel: O Homem que Descobriu as Leis da Herança | A História do DNA - Ep. 2
Have you ever wondered why children resemble their parents? Why some traits disappear in one generation and reappear in grandchildren? And how does biological inheritance work? Long before science knew about genes, chromosomes, or the structure of DNA, a monk named Gregor Mendel found the first answers in a small monastery garden. In this second episode of the series The History of DNA, we return to the 19th century to follow the journey of the man who transformed peas into one of the most important experiments in the history of science. By crossing thousands of plants and mathematically analyzing their descendants, Mendel realized that the characteristics did not mix or disappear. They were transmitted as discrete units, obeying predictable proportions. Thus were born the concepts of dominance, recessiveness, and the fundamental laws of genetic inheritance. But the scientific community did not understand what he had discovered. His article was published in a little-known journal, his ideas were practically ignored, and Mendel died without receiving recognition for founding a new science. Just 34 years later, other researchers rediscovered his results and realized that this unknown monk had revealed the basic rules of heredity. In this episode, you will understand: • why Mendel chose to study peas; • how his crosses worked; • where the 3 to 1 and 9 to 3 to 3 to 1 ratios come from; • the meaning of dominant and recessive traits; • why his work was ignored for decades; • how his discoveries gave rise to modern genetics. This is the story of Gregor Mendel, the son of farmers who found mathematical order within life—decades before the world was ready to understand it.
