One cheap missile sank the pride of the Royal Navy, and this is the full story of HMS Sheffield. On May 4, 1982, during the Falklands War, one of the Royal Navy's most modern destroyers was hit by a French Exocet missile fired from an Argentine Super Étendard aircraft. Argentina had only five of these missiles at the time, yet one was enough to kill 20 men and send the 4,100-ton ship to the bottom. In this film, you'll learn the full story behind the tragedy: why the ship blinded itself to its death, how its satellite dish jammed the threat sensor, why the crew had less than 20 seconds to react, and how a cup of tea saved a sailor's life. I'll also discuss the biggest controversy in this story: whether the missile's warhead ever detonated. I'll debunk the myth of the aluminum ship, and show how five cheap missiles forever changed the arithmetic of naval warfare. The lessons from this disaster have reached the Baltic Sea and the modern Polish fleet in NATO. This is a story about the end of an era, when thick armor and big guns no longer guarantee survival.
