Bovine ephemeral fever, also known as "3-day fever," is a viral disease affecting cattle and water buffalo. It is caused by an RNA virus from the Rhabdoviridae family, the species Bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV). The disease is distributed worldwide, especially in tropical and subtropical regions, and typically occurs during the summer and rainy seasons. Symptoms of BEF include fever, weakness, hypersalivation, loss of appetite, discomfort when moving, and swelling of the face, tongue, and legs. Infected cattle may also experience diarrhea and dehydration, which can impact milk production and reproductive performance. If a cow or water buffalo exhibits suspicious symptoms, such as fever, weakness, hypersalivation, refusal to eat, and lameness, contact a veterinarian immediately.
