It was in 1972, when each left Nippon Pro-Wrestling to found their own organizations, that Baba and Inoki's off-ring feud began. Immediately after All Japan's launch, All Japan dominated the sport. While All Japan was founded with the backing of Nippon Television from the start, New Japan had no television broadcasts immediately after its founding. Furthermore, in terms of recruiting foreign wrestlers, Baba had strong ties to major American organizations, including The Funks and the NWA, and WWWF through his personal relationship with Bruno Sammartino. Meanwhile, Inoki only had Karl Gotch, who had not achieved success in the US, and was forced to develop foreign wrestlers on his own. However, a savior appeared in March 1973, one year after the launch of New Japan Pro Wrestling: Seiji Sakaguchi. Sakaguchi would later wield power as the company's president in order to repay the debts that Inoki had incurred. The reason he was called a savior at this point was because Sakaguchi's transfer from Nippon Pro Wrestling to New Japan prompted NET TV to decide to broadcast New Japan Pro Wrestling's matches. With New Japan Pro Wrestling's television broadcasts underway, the situation gradually began to turn around. Inoki, who was just entering his 30s and in the prime of his career as a wrestler, gained a cult following by fighting a number of fierce battles with the likes of Tiger Jeet Singh and Stan Hansen, centered around his NWF Heavyweight Championship. During this time, Inoki relentlessly pressured Baba to fight him through magazines and newspapers. However, Baba continued to ignore Inoki's provocations. This led to the negative image of Baba as someone who was "afraid of Inoki and ran away." If the two marquee wrestlers fought and the match was decided regardless of who won, the loser would suffer great damage. Knowing this, Baba remained silent, and Inoki continued to provoke him, knowing this too. And if, by any chance, Baba actually accepted the challenge, he may have been planning to launch a fight. In March 1974, Inoki won a major Japanese showdown against International Pro Wrestling's ace, Strong Kobayashi. In response, fans and the media began to call Inoki "the best wrestler in Japan," and Inoki finally sent Baba a certified public challenge. "I'll leave everything to you: TV, promotional rights, date, time, and venue. Stand up, Baba! Let's settle this like men." But Baba still refused to budge.
