🚢 Italian emigrant ship in 1900: from the ports of Naples, Genoa, and Palermo, millions of families crossed the Atlantic in third class, crammed into the hold, chasing the American dream. ⚓ Between 1876 and 1915, approximately fourteen million Italians left the peninsula, driven by the large estates of Southern Italy, the phylloxera that devastated the vines, the pellagra of the Veneto plains, and the 1908 Messina earthquake. 🌊 To curb the abuses of airline agents, on January 31, 1901, Parliament passed Law No. 23, championed by Luigi Luzzatti, which established the General Commissioner for Emigration and imposed health inspections in the ports of Genoa, Naples, and Palermo. In the holds of the Navigazione Generale Italiana and Lloyd Italiano steamships, third-class accommodations accommodated up to two hundred people per cabin, with three-tiered iron bunks, kerosene lamps, and rations distributed according to strict timetables. The crossing lasted ten to fourteen days to New York, and seventeen to twenty-five to South America. Upon arrival, Ellis Island, opened in 1892, welcomed those disembarking in New York Bay; the Hospedaria dos Imigrantes del Brás in São Paulo and the Hotel de Inmigrantes in Buenos Aires processed the rest.
