He brought famine upon them, and in his zeal he decimated them. By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens and also made fire fall three times. How glorious you were, Elijah, with your wonders! Who can boast of being like you? You raised a corpse from death and from the abyss, by the word of the Most High; you brought kings to ruin and snatched noble men from their beds; on Sinai you heard words of rebuke and on Horeb sentences of punishment; you anointed avenging kings and prophets to succeed you; you were taken up in a fiery whirlwind, in a chariot of fiery horses; you were appointed to rebuke future times, to appease wrath before it broke out, to reconcile fathers to their children and restore the tribes of Jacob. Blessed are those who saw you and fell asleep in love, for we too shall live. When Elijah was taken up in the whirlwind, Elisha was filled with his spirit. During his life no prince made him tremble, no one could subdue him. Nothing was impossible for him, even in death, his body prophesied. During his life he performed wonders, and after his death his works were marvelous. Word of God ■ Psalm 96: Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous ones! The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice, let the many coastlands be glad. Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. Fire goes before him, burning up his enemies all around. His lightnings light up the world, and the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory. Those who worship statues will be put to shame, those who take pride in idols.
