How Sheep Wool Turns Into a Traditional Felt Mat | Ancient Felt Making

Traditional Persian felt-making — the craft of producing dense woolen textiles through pressure, moisture, and handwork — is one of the oldest surviving handicrafts in Iran. In this video, we visit one of the last remaining master felt makers in the Gilan province, a craftsman who has dedicated his entire life to this dying art and has trained many apprentices over the decades. Persian felt is created through a fully manual process: cleaning and preparing raw sheep wool, layering the fibers, adding natural soap and warm water, and then rolling, pressing, and shaping the wool until it transforms into a strong and durable fabric. No weaving, no machines — only skilled hands, patience, and generations of experience. Today, modern materials have replaced many traditional crafts, and felt-making is slowly disappearing. But masters like this keep the heritage alive, preserving a meaningful part of Iran’s rural culture and craftsmanship. If you’re interested in ancient techniques, handmade arts, and cultural heritage, this video will take you deep into the world of traditional Persian felt-making. #felt #felted #wool #woolencraft #Feltmaking
