In November 1950, the French UN Battalion landed in Busan amidst the veiled sarcasm of American officers. For them, France was synonymous with June 1940, forty days, and collapse. This battalion of barely a thousand men was integrated into the 2nd US Infantry Division with a simple mission: to hold. They were about to redefine what holding meant. Ralph Monclar—whose real name was Raoul Magrin-Vernerey, a five-star general who voluntarily reassigned himself to lieutenant colonel to gain the right to command—had been wounded seven times in the trenches of World War I. His men came from Indochina, Bir Hakeim, and Cassino. They carried a doctrine etched into their very being: there is no retreat. There is a counterattack. On January 12, 1951, several Chinese divisions—approximately twenty thousand men—converged on their positions in the frozen mountains of Central Korea, in temperatures of minus thirty degrees Celsius. The neighboring American units requested permission to withdraw. The battalion asked for nothing. It held its ground. Then it counterattacked during the night. On February 23, 1951, Monclar requested permission to take Hill 1037, a hill declared impregnable after two failed American attempts. The assault lasted nineteen hours, in absolute silence, with grenades and hand-to-hand combat. The summit falls at 11:00 PM. American Major Thomas Bradley, liaison officer for the 2nd Division, noted in his report: “These men don’t fight war the way we taught them. They have their own science.” What the Americans discovered took months to understand and years to publicly acknowledge. 📚 To learn more / historical context: — History of the French Battalion of the UN (1950-1953) — Korean War: Campaigns of the 2nd US Infantry Division — Biography of General Raoul Magrin-Vernerey (Ralph Monclar) — French Foreign Legion and French Expeditionary Corps (World War II) — Offensive doctrine in the French forces, 1940-1960 👍 If this documentary taught you something, a like and a subscription make all the difference to the algorithm—and allow us to continue this work. #KoreanWar #FrenchBattalion #militaryhistory
