The American plan called for an advance of 15 kilometers per day. Leclerc announced to his officers: "We'll be there tomorrow evening." In 24 hours, his columns covered 83 kilometers, destroyed 147 enemy positions, and took 2,000 prisoners. The American units arrived 36 hours later—and found a city already secured. On August 23, Captain Dronne's column entered Paris at 10:15 p.m. through the Porte d'Italie. American observer James Woodruff wrote: "I realized that we weren't accompanying liberators. We were accompanying men returning home."
