Absolute Love - 1

We talk about God’s unconditional love, but that is so foreign to how we live, that we may talk about it, but we do not really understand it. And, the worst part of that misunderstanding is that our ignorance keeps us from participating in and enjoying the benefits of God’s lavish love toward us. This teaching looks at how God is love and that love is unconditional. Unconditional means that the lover pours out their love on the loved regardless of who the loved is or how they live or how they respond to the lover’s love. If a person says, “I love you because you’re so good to me,” that’s conditional love. Conditional love is a 2 sided coin. If I can love you BECAUSE you’re good to me, then I can also hate you because you are an evil, perverted person. If my statement of love includes words like if, else, because, until, unless, etc., then my love is conditional. Paul describes God’s unconditional love in I Cor 13. Another adjective for this kind of love is absolute. Absolute meaning a love that is always the maximum, always directed toward the loved, always accepts the loved and never condemns or judges the loved. The challenge in this teaching is that our destiny as Christians is to be morphed into the image of Jesus. God is love and Jesus is God, therefore Jesus is this absolute love just like God is. If my destiny or calling is to be in union with Jesus and let Him live His life through me, then that means that I should expect to become this absolute love, too – this absolute love that is opposite of almost everything we have learned in life about love.
