DF no.324, Improvised drum solo using flams & other rudiments played with multirods on Premier Crown

Thoughts on playing with multirods? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Please comment below. Oh, and please subscribe! This solo uses a variety of rudiments, with an emphasis on flams and 4-stroke ruffs. It's one continuous take with a minute or so cut from the start and 30 seconds off the end. I didn't set out to play flams; they just happened. I did intend to play somewhat melodically and not too loudly, so chose to use multirods (Hot Rods, rods, canes - whatever you call them). These are cheap ones and you can see I'm having some issues with them! (Expensive ones are 4x the price and don't last much longer.) The Four Stroke Ruff is strangely absent from the Percussive Arts Society's list of 40 rudiments - see https://pas.org/rudiments/ but it was one of the rudiments I was taught as a boy by a classical percussionist. It's like the Single Stroke Four except that the first three strokes are played as grace notes/ghost notes, with the emphasis on the last stoke. (All four strokes of the Single Stroke Four are even, full strokes.) Often the bass drum, sometime the hi-hat, plays the last stroke here. There are also some 5 stroke ruffs, at a stretch. Obviously there are other rudiments in play here; single and double stroke rolls, various paradiddles. I find I have to use a more wristy technique to with the multirods, less of the fingers. Because they don't really bounce they need to be pulled up off the drum or cymbal. Mid-1980s Premier Crown kit, 22"/13"/16", 1960s Premier birch snare. 1960s-70s Paiste Formula 602 cymbals: 12" Thin (effectively a splash), 14" hats, 18" Thin, 20" Medium, 20" Thin. These vintage 602 cymbals aren't designated as a ride or a crash or a splash, they just have Thin, Medium, (and presumably) Heavy stamped on them, the idea being you can play them as you wish - they're just cymbals! Usual room sound only recording with two old Tascam TR-100s and a bit of camera sound. Minimal editing.
