Larry Towell - Somewhere between Artist and Photojournalist
THIS VIDEO: Larry Towell occupies a rare position in photography: he works in a documentary -photojournalistic genre and has done a lot of conflict work, yet he consistently produces images that feel lyrical, reflective, and sometimes even melancholic. He doesn’t seek out the big news picture, his stories are built up of quieter descriptive moments. This is very different from the photo-essays of say James Nachtway or even Steve McCurry - it’s a less direct way of communicating, but arguable equally and sometimes more impactful. He uses light, shadow, details and gestures to convey a mood. You almost never see a Towell picture that is exclusively about conveying information – he’s always taking us along a poetic path towards the message he’s conveying. It’s probably more accurate to describe him as an art photographer, who happens to take pictures of journalistic subjects. In this video I’ll look at what I have learnt from his work and how he’s impacted my approach making photographs. For me, his most impactful photographs were from his two more gentle, quieter projects that he produced closer to home - his work on the Mennonites and the personal record of his family life 1-on-1 MENTORING: https://graemewilliams.co.za/mentor-p...
