Moreton on Lugg Level Crossing

Saturday August 24 2013 at 5.56 pm. The 14.23 Holyhead to Cardiff (19.15) train just north of Hereford. This crossing is operated from the signalbox and the control switches are by the right hand window. After the train passes you can just hear the thuds of signals being put to danger and then you can see the signalman, in orange, press the barrier raise button. In January 2010 after being distracted by a phone call from someone wanting to move sheep across the line, the signalman looked at the cars waiting at the crossing and decided that the expected train had gone past. He then put the signals to danger and pressed the barrier raise button. 9 seconds later the braking train hit two cars at 58 mph. One person died. The signalman had worked here for 19 years. He and Network Rail were fined in a court case earlier this year. There was a station here until 1958.
