I cannot estimate the extent of my accusers’ influence on you; however, despite their lies, their words seemed so real that even I began to doubt myself as I listened to all this. But believe me, not a single true word came out of their mouths. Yet, I was astonished that, among the many lies they fabricated, they declared me a master orator and admonished you to keep your eyes open lest you be deceived by my eloquent words. Knowing that the moment I opened my mouth, it would become clear that I was not a particularly eloquent man, wouldn’t this lie reveal their shamelessness? If they call everyone who speaks the truth an orator, I have nothing to say to them. But in a sense far different from what they mean… As I’ve said before, there’s not a single shred of truth in what they tell you. I’m telling you the whole truth. I will tell you. My fellow citizens, dear Athenians, I will not deceive you with flowery words like they do. I will tell you what I believe to be true. It is unbecoming of a man of my age to come before you like an inexperienced young man and make a few grandiloquent pronouncements. My only request of you is this: do not be surprised when you see me speaking here, just as I do in the agora, at the goldsmith's counter, and in similar places, in my defense. And do not interrupt me…” SOCRATES "Socrates, who lived in Athens between 469 and 399 BC, is the philosopher who laid the foundations of philosophical thought and the inquisitive mind. While philosophers before him studied the natural world, Socrates emphasized human experience. He believed that everything in life should be questioned for a person to live a good and meaningful life… Socrates was the son of a stonemason and a midwife. He likely received a basic Greek education. In those times when appearance was highly valued, Socrates was a man who could have been described as ugly." He served in the army during the Peloponnesian War. He married a much younger woman and fathered three children. He lived in poverty. Before turning to philosophy, he worked as a stonemason. Socrates left no written sources. Information about his life and thoughts has been passed down to us through the writings of his students, such as Plato and Xenophon, and through indirect accounts by Aristotle, who was born fifteen years after Socrates' death. PLATO "Plato was born in Aegina in 427 BC and died in Athens in 347 BC. His real name was Aristocles. Plato, who also practiced gymnastics in accordance with the traditions of the Greek aristocracy, was named Aristocles after his grandfather. Known as a highly athletic and physically strong person, Plato took his name from the Greek word meaning broad-breasted. Coming from a noble family on both his mother and father's side, he served in the military in the cavalry. He was raised as an artist and a man of letters. He began studying philosophy, which seems to have held a significant place in his fields, by taking lessons from the Heraclitus Cratylus. In his youth, Plato wrote lyric and dramatic poetry and aspired to become a poet… At the age of 20, Plato met Socrates and burned all of his works and tragedies of this kind after meeting him. With Socrates, he turned his attention entirely to philosophy and remained his student for eight years until his teacher's death in 399 BC.
