While philosophers before him examined the natural world, Socrates focused on human experience. He believed that everything in life should be questioned for a person to live a good and meaningful life... Socrates was the son of a stonemason and a midwife. He likely received a basic Greek education. In those times when appearance was highly valued, Socrates was a man who could be described as ugly. He served in the army during the Peloponnesian War. He married a much younger woman and had three children. He lived in poverty. Before turning to philosophy, he worked as a stonemason. He worked. Socrates left no written sources. Information about his life and thought has been passed down to us through the writings of his students, such as Plato and Xenophon, and through indirect accounts by Aristotle, who was born fifteen years after Socrates' death.
