Today, we're taking you on a captivating journey through Našice and Martin, two beautiful locations nestled in the heart of Slavonia, Croatia. Našice is a charming town in the Osijek-Baranja County, located 50 km west of Osijek, standing at an elevation of 154 meters above sea level. Našice is rich in cultural and historical landmarks. One of the most stunning buildings in this region is the Neoclassical Pejačević family castle. Within its spacious park, you’ll find a smaller, one-story hunting lodge built by the Pejačević family, along with a Neogothic chapel housing their crypt and the tomb of the composer Dora Pejačević. Additionally, the town features a Gothic-Baroque Franciscan monastery and the parish church of St. Anthony of Padua. This church, adorned with a lavishly decorated oratory featuring the Pejačević coat of arms and remarkable decorative grilles, dates back to 1777 and stands as a testament to the rich history of the region. In contrast, the village of Martin is a small settlement situated along the D2 highway (Podravina Highway), lying on the northern slopes of Krndija at an elevation of 150 meters. Martin belongs to the town of Našice and boasts a Roman Catholic church dedicated to St. Martin. This late Romanesque church has a rich history, initially owned by the Templars in the late 12th century before passing to the Ivanići. During the Croatian War of Independence in 1991, the church was damaged by three tank shells fired by the Yugoslav Army after three days of fighting with Croatian forces during the capture of the Našice barracks. The village of Martin, which developed in the mid-18th century, now hosts residents from various parts of Croatia, including Gorski Kotar and Slovakia. Martin celebrates its annual festival, or "kirvaj," on November 11th, with its church of St. Martin preserving traces of the area's rich history, including the stone Templar coat of arms.
