Oil Paint Mediums - Impasto Medium and Impasto Putty Review #artsupplies #impasto
This video compares Impasto Medium and Impasto Putty made by Natural Pigments. Observations: I can’t tell much difference between the Medium and Putty. They have a very similar color, texture, and feel, which is comparable to, although perhaps slightly less buttery than, oil paint. When mixed with oil paint, the textures of both are not discernibly different than oil paint on its own. Neither are sticky or tacky. Both are able to hold their shape just like oil paint. Neither held their shape better than oil paint on its own. Both will tint/lighten whatever paint they are being mixed with. Putty dries faster than the Medium. Oil paint on its own dries the fastest. Notes: Both the Medium and Putty are known as “extenders,” which increase the apparent volume of paint without altering the consistency. Neither contains stearates, solvents, driers, or natural or synthetic resins. According to Natural Pigments, they are “safe to add to oil paint without worrying about cracking or delaminating.” The Medium is made with ground calcite, silica, and bentonite in pale linseed oil. The Putty is made with ground calcite, barite, and bentonite in bodied linseed oil. Both can be thinned with solvent or oil. 8 oz of Medium/Putty is roughly one-half to 1/15th the cost of 8 oz of oil paint. When I asked Natural Pigments if there was a cap on how much Medium/Putty could be added, they responded: “There is no practical maximum amount. However, the more you add to oil paint, the more transparent the paint becomes, and then the color of the oil becomes more dominant in the mixture. Only use the amount you need to do the task.” If you’re interested to learn more, I’ve added links below: Impasto Medium: https://www.naturalpigments.com/impas...
