American Joins Philippines Dragon Boat Team

The Siargao Dragons are off to Boracay to compete in our 4th International Competition for Dragon Boat Racing! We were able to raise enough funds and gain sponsors to help send our team to represent our beloved home- Siargao Island. Our team stated when we had a competition here in Siargao but the island had no team yet. So our coach formed a team of surfers and locals/ residents with just 2 weeks to prepare. We didn't have a boat, and we only had 5 paddles to share with our entire team. We would just stand in the water shore paddling and taking turns. Competition day was our first time in a boat together and we had to borrow other teams paddles - even the Navy let us haha. After the comp we were very motivated to keep going after unexpected amazing results from our races. We placed 3rd in all of our divisions without much preparation. The champions were the Navy. We now have been sponsored with boats and enough paddles for our team. We also did enough fundraising to send our boys on their first plane ride to Boracay. We still took 2 ferries before the final flight to save money with our budget.
