Why Creative Work Never Feels Safe For South Asian Women

In this episode, I end up circling around something I didn’t fully have words for until recently: why creative work, even when you know what you’re doing, still doesn’t feel fully safe. I started out thinking I had a system. I can talk into a mic, follow one loose idea, edit later, and just keep going. On paper, that should mean I’m not lost anymore. But in practice, I still feel that same quiet disorientation underneath everything. Isn't that strange? Doing what you love and still feeling lost? And I think it has to do with something deeper than productivity or consistency. Growing up as a desi girl, telling the truth wasn’t always a neutral act. There were consequences. There was a way you were supposed to be, and most of it involved being careful, agreeable, and not too much of yourself. So even now, when I’m just speaking into a camera or recording thoughts, there’s a part of me that still reads it as “risk,” even if nothing bad is actually happening. What I’ve realized is that the feeling of being lost might actually be closer to feeling unsafe. And that doesn’t disappear just because you start doing the work you love. It just gets more familiar, almost like background noise you learn to live with. So this is me trying to name that.
