Episode 6: 1945-1959 The Golden Age
As much of the world recovered from the devastation of the Second World War, the United States entered a period of rapid economic growth. During this time, the purpose-built cruise ship began to re-emerge, while ocean liners experienced their final era of prominence. Advancements in aviation technology—accelerated by the war—soon began to reshape long-distance travel. As commercial air travel expanded, the foundations of the Jet Age were laid, gradually changing the role of sea voyages forever. Often referred to as the golden age of cruising, this period offered a slower, more leisurely form of travel aboard glamorous liners as they sought to fill their remaining berths. It also marked the beginning of a clear transition from transportation to leisure-focused cruising.
