“Random Recreational Violence”: Two Men Terrorized Phoenix by Hunting Strangers
In 2005, Phoenix, Arizona became the setting for one of the most terrifying crime sprees in modern American history. Two shooters roamed the city at night, firing at random targets: cyclists, pedestrians, dogs, horses, even people sitting in cars. Victims had nothing in common except being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The killers gave their spree a name: “Random Recreational Violence.” And for months, police had no idea who was responsible or how to stop it. As the body count climbed, fear spread through neighborhoods while investigators chased thousands of dead-end tips. The shooters seemed untouchable until a drunken confession at a dive bar cracked the case open. Surveillance, wiretaps, and sheer luck led police to Dale Hausner and Samuel Dieteman, two men who treated violence like a real-life video game, cruising the streets in a Toyota Camry and “shopping” for victims. Recorded conversations revealed chilling details, including jokes about murders, complaints about not getting enough credit, and casual planning for future attacks. At trial, the full scope of the horror came into focus. Dieteman admitted to killing two people and helping carry out the attacks, while Hausner was convicted of six murders and sentenced to death. The case finally brought an end to Phoenix’s year of terror though not before dozens of lives were shattered. In 2013, Hausner died of an overdose on death row, closing the book on a spree defined by randomness, cruelty, and a city forced to live in fear. #TrueCrimeRecaps #PhoenixSerialShooter #RandomRecreationalViolence #RealLifeNightmare *We want to acknowledge and apologize for an editing mistake at 04:17 in this video, where the image shown is of the killer, Dale Hausner, instead of the victim, Claudia Cruz.
