Walking with the sound of the river and the shadows of people passing by at my back, the solemn shrine of Okano Shrine, resurrected from the infernos of war and earthquake, appears before me. The wood grain, bearing the marks of 75 years of wind and rain, breathes the pain of this city in silence, yet exudes an unwavering dignity. Passing through the torii gate of Hiranuma Suiten-gu Shrine, beyond the roar of the intersecting railway tracks, I enter the sacred realm of the water god, which even repelled the infernos of air raids. The sound of water from the purification fountain and the sharp beams of light filtering into the sacred grove completely shut out the hustle and bustle of the city. And at the end of our journey, the imposing shadow cast by the 4.8-meter-tall memorial to those executed at Kyusei-ji Temple silently conveys the unfinished history the town carries.
