The light lingers longer in June, so the evening walk past the marina doesn’t really start until after eight. The heat of the day has dropped off, and the air feels warm but breezy off the water. Boats rock gently in their moorings, and you can hear the soft knock of wood against the pontoons. There’s the smell of salt and the sea, mixed with something cooking from the restaurants nearby. People are out walking in no hurry. Couples, families, a few older groups chatting as they stroll. Kids dart ahead then double back to their parents. Music drifts out from a café somewhere, quiet enough that it just blends into the background. The water catches the last of the sunset - pinks and soft oranges fading into blue. Lights start to come on along the waterfront, reflecting in the calm surface. You can hear gulls calling out, and further out, the low hum of a boat engine heading back in. It’s relaxed. The kind of evening where nobody’s in a rush, and the walk feels more about just being there than getting anywhere. By the time you turn back, the sky’s darkening and the marina feels calm, like the whole town’s winding down for the week.
