A Life-Threatening Battle on a Single Air Hose: Pen Shell Divers Before dawn at Sumun Port in Jangheung, Jeollanam-do, Captain Choi Sang-cheol and Lee Sang-ryeol, a diver with 30 years of experience, set out to harvest pen shells. But why is a diver needed to catch pen shells? Because these shells grow buried deep in the mud, making it impossible to catch them with nets or fishing lines—they must be harvested by hand, one by one. Holding a single oxygen hose in his mouth, the diver leaps into the pitch-black ocean where visibility is practically zero. Relying solely on this hose, the pen shell diver stays underwater for about an hour per dive, working continuously for five solid hours to harvest roughly 700 pen shells. While the diver gathers shells relying strictly on intuition, a veteran crew member on the boat must constantly manage the hose to prevent it from tangling. If the air hose gets twisted, it can result in a fatal accident. Captain Choi keeps his eyes fixed on the sea, never letting go of the line for even a second. Suddenly, strong currents twist the hose, causing the startled crew to panic for the diver's safety... Amidst the constantly changing ocean conditions, will they be able to complete their dangerous operation safely? Free-Diving for Wild Oysters: The Geoje Haenyeo Five Haenyeo (female free divers) gather at Gujora Port in Geoje for deep-water harvesting. Among them are 50-year veterans Odul-nam, Kim Bok-sun, and Kim Sun-ja, along with Kim Sun-nam with 5 years of experience, and Ha Jeong-mi with 2 years. They have all gathered to harvest wild rock oysters. These wild oysters, also known as rock oysters, grow attached to rocks 10 meters beneath the sea surface. Unless there is a storm warning or typhoon, these divers head out to sea every day. During five continuous hours of diving, they refrain from drinking even a sip of water because taking a restroom break is impossible. Their equipment is simple: a wetsuit, a net, and a float (Tewak). Without any oxygen gear, these women plunge into the ocean using only their bare bodies. Each dive lasts anywhere from 1 minute to at most 2–3 minutes. Working entirely on a single breath makes the labor grueling. "Only dive as long as your breath allows!"—overexerting oneself can lead to severe accidents, requiring constant vigilance every second. To meet today's quota, they exert all their strength to pry off the firmly attached oysters, but often fail. Even after moving to different spots, things don't go as planned...
