The 5th video about our 2025 Baltic Sea circumnavigation! We're sailing the challenging Polish coast eastward! Challenging because it's exposed to the open Baltic Sea, with no shelter except for the narrow and widely spaced harbor entrances, which may not even be safe to enter. Strong westerly, and especially northerly and northeasterly, winds can make it very uncomfortable, even dangerous. Hence our extended stays in the harbors of Kołobrzeg and Darłowko. However, we were dealing with a persistent northerly wind. It's also challenging because of the firing ranges, the largest of which, between Darłowo and Ustka, was closed all week, except at night and on Sundays. The other firing ranges off Świnoujście and the Hel Peninsula were either open or only intermittently operational. All of this can be completely different at other times. So, you should take your time for this coast (or, if the weather is favorable, sail straight through day and night, but that's not our style). Then it's a wonderful experience with interesting places! Here are a few tips: Due to the narrow entrances and channels into the four ports, which are actually regulated river estuaries (Kolobrzeg, Darlowko, Ustka, and Leba), and the potential oncoming traffic from excursion boats (often Viking ships), freighters, and fishing vessels, it is strongly recommended to contact the respective port control on VHF channel 12 before entering. This didn't happen to us, but we heard of a sailor who entered the narrow entrance of Leba in a lee shore situation, only to find a dredger right in the blind estuary. Information on firing ranges: The BSH website offers a good overview map of the firing ranges and links to the Polish "Notices to Mariners" and "Nautical Warnings," which announce the closures with precise timing.
