The events in southern Africa in the late 19th and early 20th centuries sparked a keen interest and response in Russia, where public opinion sympathized with the Boer colonists of two small republics under attack from the powerful British Empire. The song "Transvaal, Transvaal, my country, you are burning in fire" gained widespread popularity. However, it later became clear that not everything was so clear-cut, and Protestant settlers from the Netherlands, France, and Germany exploited the local black population no less harshly than the British colonizers. At the same time, the nomadic Zulus were causing considerable problems for the Hottentots and other tribes of southern Africa, where, after Louis XIV repealed the Edict of Nantes, European Huguenots flocked, wielding not only the Bible but also weapons. Sooner or later, the Cape Colony, founded in the 17th century by Jan van Riebeeck, was bound to fall under the influence of the powerful British Empire... The situation became even more acute when diamonds (Kimberley) and gold (the Johannesburg area) were discovered in southern Africa. War became inevitable, but the first large-scale clashes with the Boers revealed the British's serious vulnerabilities.
