Want to transform this reading into a journey? Discover Existential Mentoring: http://www.lugaroriginal.com/mentoria Our nine-day immersion in Seneca's "On the Shortness of Life" begins here. Before opening the text, let me tell you who this Stoic philosopher was: Lucius Annaeus Seneca, a man who was ill his entire life, exiled, tutor to Nero, one of the richest men in Rome, who preached a simple life and died with the calm of someone who had prepared for death his whole life. Someone who didn't theorize about the brevity of life, he felt it in his own skin. Today we read the first pages (5 to 7), where Seneca makes the turning point that sustains the entire book: it's not that life is short, it's that we shorten it. It's long enough for those who know how to use it. The problem has never been a lack of time, but rather what we do with the time we have. From there, I'll reflect with you on the perception of time in each phase of life, on what Seneca calls vice (everything that hijacks your will), and on the difference between living and simply letting time pass. This is the invitation of Thoughtful Reading: not to observe the sea from afar, but to put your feet in the water. To read slowly, comment, take notes, and use the words of a man who looked death up close to take an honest dive into ourselves. If you want to share this experience with me in the coming days, leave your name in the comments.
