It comes from working all day and having nothing left over. I work alone on what I create, and one afternoon I sat exhausted, tried to remember what I had done that day, and found almost nothing. The post I spent the morning putting together had already evaporated from my feed in 24 hours. Then I looked at the wooden table that has supported me for years, made by someone who has already died, and I realized: that table lasts longer than everything I produce in an entire month. It was Hannah Arendt, in "The Human Condition" (1958), who gave me the map to see this. She showed that within the word "work" reside three different things: labor, which is consumed in its own use and disappears; the work, which lasts longer than the moment of its creation; and action, which leaves no material trace but reveals who we are. The weariness, I discovered, wasn't from working too much. It was from living almost solely in labor, thinking I was building a life. And there's the trap of "what's the point?". When everything starts existing for something else, the current never reaches a beginning, and usefulness becomes meaninglessness. Rebuilding, then, isn't about filling the day with more activity. It's about choosing what, from the day, deserves to last: creating a work that remains, saying a word that stays in someone's memory, appearing whole at least once among the people you love. Not measuring life by what it yields, but by what remains.
