Battle of Suriagehara, Fall of the Ashina Clan, Battle of Osaki, Battle of Koriyama Date Masamune fought fierce battles with the Ashina, Mogami, and Soma clans in his quest for dominance over the Oshu region. In 1587, Toyotomi Hideyoshi issued a general peace order for Oshu, banning all acts of war. Masamune sought to conquer Oshu before Hideyoshi's influence there was strong enough. In 1589, Masamune intervened in a civil war within the Osaki clan, but was defeated. As Ashina Yoshihiro and Satake Yoshishige also began invading Date territory, putting Masamune in a difficult position. However, Masamune used strategy to turn the tide and, in 1586, launched an invasion of Aizu. With clever strategy, Masamune defeated the Ashina forces at the Battle of Suriagehara, captured Kurokawa Castle, and achieved subjugation of Aizu. Ashina Yoshihiro fled, and the Ashina clan was wiped out. Masamune then gained control of the entire Sendō region, subjugating the Ishikawa and Nikaido clans, rapidly expanding his influence.
