Recreating a 5,000-Year-Old Quartz Crystal Dagger
For years I've wanted to attempt this. A 5,000-year-old quartz crystal dagger discovered in Spain - a remarkable artefact made from a material most flintknappers would avoid. Quartz crystal is unpredictable. It fractures differently. It can crumble without warning. After finally finding a large enough piece of crystal, I decided to test whether it could be worked into a dagger blade using ancient techniques. In this film: I examine a photograph of the original artefact Test whether the crystal will fracture conchoidally Attempt to shape a dagger blade And explore the risks and challenges of working such an unforgiving material Experimental archaeology often means failure is part of the process. Let's see how this one goes.
