▶ Temples spread out like stars in the sky, and pagodas lined up like a parade of geese - Samguk Yusa The stone Buddhas of Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju, recorded in Samguk Sagi and other sources, stand upright as a part of nature, imbued with the compassion of millennia and the aspirations of all living beings. Within this forest of stone Buddhas, tiny creatures are interconnected under the Buddha's teaching that all beings are interdependent. Carved by the ancient Silla people for approximately 400 years, the stone Buddhas of Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju tell the mystery of their humble and magnificent history and the fierce struggles of survival for the tiny creatures that have made their home there. ▶ View natural history through the window of the humanities. The forest where millennia of myths began and witnessed the fall of a glorious dynasty. Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju, where the aspirations of people and the laws of nature are engraved. A journey to discover these millennia-old traces begins. ▶ A Midnight Ecstasy When the moon rises, Namsan's true beauty is revealed. Recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2000, Namsan in Gyeongju is a sacred forest imbued with the spirit of Silla. It is a vast time capsule, a place where one can experience the kingdom's thousand-year history. Namsan boasts over 200 stone Buddhas and stone pagodas imbued with the aspirations of the people. From the Buddha meditating beneath a Bodhi tree, to the "Rock-carved Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva" (the Buddha who hears the sounds of all things), to the "Granny Buddha" (the Seated Rock-carved Buddha), these rugged yet benevolent Buddhas dot the valley, imbuing the forest with a mystical vitality and attracting the small creatures that inhabit it. Like a miracle, this mystical forest of life reveals its true beauty in the dead of night. Moonlight seeps into the stone Buddha, revealing its gentle smile. The sight of the stone Buddha under the moonlight brings to mind the poetic line: "Pretty only when observed closely, lovely only when gazed upon for a long time." The fourth installment of Nature's Time Capsule, "Gyeongju Namsan: The Forest of Stone Buddhas," reveals the true face of Namsan, a place rarely seen, and its astonishingly beautiful scenery. ▶ Namsan: A Vast Forest Created by Tiny Lifeforms Every April, pine pollen, carried by the wind, scatters across Namsan like rain. From a distance, the spectacle unfolds, resembling a golden dusting of dust scattered across the forest. When the pollen from the male pine blossoms miraculously meets the female flowers, tiny buds, like coffee beans, sprout. It is these tiny creatures that nurture Namsan's forest. Bamboo shoots in their growing season exude water from their bodies. This water, which becomes fog at dawn, moistens Namsan's trees and supports the growth of moss. Birds gather the moss and build their nests. In this way, the creatures of Namsan do not exist in isolation; they are interconnected and create the forest. ▶ The truth of Mother Nature is Buddha." Discover the forest that embodies Silla's governing philosophy What did Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju mean to the Silla people? Why did they carve so many stone pagodas and Buddhas throughout Namsan Mountain? Silla stonemasons sought Buddha in nature. The rock-carved Buddhas, carved from rock, are Buddhas of the fields and Buddhas of the mountains. The stone Buddhas subtly change color with the movement of light, creating a mystical feeling, as if observing a living Buddha. Under the Buddhist philosophy of Avatamsaka, which holds that everything in the world can become Buddha, Namsan is a place where both the low and the high live in harmony.
