◼︎ Gyeongju, the host city of the 2025 APEC Summit, is a city whose original value has often been overlooked amidst its familiarity. A city itself, Gyeongju, a historical site, was brought back into the spotlight with the excavation of the Geumgwanchong Tomb during the Japanese colonial period. However, since the 1980s, it has suffered from overdevelopment and damage. During my reporting in the early 2000s, shocking instances of cultural heritage damage were raised, including a gas station in front of the Noseo-dong tomb, an ancient tomb surrounded by trash, and the Danseoksan Rock Buddha damaged after the installation of a protective barrier. The construction of apartments in Hwangseong-dong at the time, in particular, signaled the onset of overdevelopment. In this context, the Cultural Heritage Protection Act and budget constraints inevitably restricted citizens' property rights, serving as a powerful argument for the inevitability of development. Gyeongju is an unprecedented city, having endured for a millennium. Discussing its status as a World Heritage site without proper preservation infrastructure is merely superficial.
