WTF happened to Conan the Destroyer? It’s a question many like you and I have asked after witnessing this debacle that this Conan sequel was. Back in 1982, Conan the Barbarian sworded and magicked its way to success with R-rated savagery and a tone that was brooding alright, but just enough to be enjoyable. But two years later, Conan the Destroyer hit the theaters, and this time around, it was a lighter, campier adventure that succeeded in winding up or rather, destroying Conan’s live-action prospects for decades. How did a once-promising sword-and-sorcery franchise fall on its own blade? What went wrong? Was it Arnold? Or the studio? Or something else entirely?
