The Mercedes-Benz E 300 de is a plug-in hybrid. Due to increasingly stringent environmental standards, all manufacturers wishing to sell cars in Europe must significantly reduce emissions across their model ranges. Otherwise, they face penalties. Consequently, manufacturers are investing in low-emission powertrains. Mercedes promises to electrify (i.e., introduce hybrid or electric variants) its entire range by 2022. Plug-in hybrid power means the car can travel up to several dozen kilometers on electric power. The large battery is charged from a power outlet or by excess energy generated by the combustion engine, for example, during long highway trips. These several dozen kilometers should be sufficient for city driving, especially in zero-emission zones. When electric driving is not necessary, the car can be switched to regular hybrid mode. The Mercedes E-Class 300 de is unique in that it is a plug-in hybrid with a diesel engine. Most hybrids are powered by petrol engines, and the only diesel hybrids I remember are the Peugeot 508 RXH and the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 (the latter from 2012, as Peugeot recently announced a plug-in version of the current generation). Volvo also experimented with the previous-generation V60. The Mercedes E 300 de is powered by a 194-horsepower diesel engine—the same one used in the E-Class 220 d I tested a few years ago—and a 122-horsepower electric motor. Output is 306 hp. Together, these two engines deliver 700 Nm of torque—300 Nm more than the diesel. The 0-100 km/h time dropped from 7.3 seconds in the 220d to 5.9 seconds in the 300de.
