Tandy 1000SX Overview and Demonstration

On this episode of the show, let's check out my new Tandy 1000SX computer! This was a Craigslist find that I actually picked up on Super Bowl Sunday, right after the game was over. This Tandy 1000SX was originally the cost-reduced single floppy drive model, but I have added a second Teac FD-55BV. The computer came stock with 384kB of system RAM, but I added another 256kB to bring it up to its maximum of 640kB, which will let me play any XT-compatible game. A US Robotics dual asynchronous serial card was added so that I can use a mouse with the system, which makes Deskmate much easier to use. Lastly, I added an XT-IDE-based compact flash adapter, which allows me to use a CF card as a hard drive. I have a Dallas real-time clock chip coming in the mail, and I would also like to add an 8087 math coprocessor, which will help SimCity to run more smoothly. With 3-channel sound and a special graphics mode superior to CGA, the Tandy 1000 makes for an excellent DOS gaming platform for games released in the late 80's, before VGA and digital sound cards took over. In the video, we check out Deskmate, the "Tran" text-to-speech program, a number of demos including 477, ButCones, and The Tandy 3 Bears demo, and we briefly play a few games, including Thexder and Space Quest II.
